  Compared to other pumps, the pump chamber of a fan is larger and serves as a reservoir for water. Before normal operation, the cavity should be filled with liquid. There is a period of self-priming before operation, during which air is continuously discharged to the outside of the pump. This period is considered partial empty running.

What causes the Roots blower to run empty?

  In fact, a large part of the reason is related to our own handling, such as unreasonable installation, improper operation methods, untimely maintenance, etc.

  The speed of the Roots blower determines its service life. Due to wear on the rotor and casing, a Roots blower with the same parameters but a different speed will have a longer service life than a faster one. Then there is the wind speed. With the same casing volume, a faster fan will definitely have a greater flow rate than a slower one.

  After all this, what are the reasons for this situation?

  Reasons for running empty: insufficient pump medium or insufficient inlet pressure;

  When the Roots blower runs empty, the impeller does not contact or only minimally contacts the medium, making it unable to work effectively, and the liquid cannot be transported normally. Because there is no effective work, the load on the motor is very small, and the generated current is also very small, which has little impact on the motor. The impact of the machine running empty on the pump is fatal. An empty-running pump is prone to cavitation, causing damage to the pump body and overflow components;

  The mechanical seal or packing seal of an empty-running pump cannot be lubricated by liquid, leading to dry grinding and rapid damage; the rotor parts and pump of the empty-running pump generate heat without liquid cooling. Those narrow gap positions can easily get stuck due to thermal expansion and contraction. The balance plate of an empty-running Roots vacuum pump lacks lubrication, and the balance plate will quickly burn out and be damaged.

  1. Handle each gap position and expand it under permissible conditions to prevent it from getting stuck;

  2. Carry out special process treatments, tempering, heat treatment, etc. on its shaft to improve its hardness, and use low-elasticity materials to prevent it from swinging significantly and getting stuck during empty running;

  3. Use mechanical seals and packing chambers that do not require liquid medium lubrication;

  4. Choose closed self-lubricating bearings that do not require oiling.
