What are the sealing forms of the Roots blower?

1. Labyrinth seal: It utilizes a series of channels formed by throttling gaps and expansion chambers through which the fluid flows, creating a throttling effect on the working medium and limiting leakage with a non-contact dynamic seal. Labyrinth seals are widely used in the shaft seals of Roots blower wall panels. The sealing mechanism can be simply explained: the fluid passes through multiple winding channels, and multiple throttling points create significant resistance, making it difficult for the fluid to leak, thus achieving the sealing purpose. Its advantages include being unaffected by rotational speed and temperature, simple structure, easy maintenance, and long service life. Increasing the number of sealing teeth appropriately can be used to seal high-pressure gases; if the sealing components are well processed and assembled, they will not fail during operation and do not need to be replaced frequently. Its disadvantage is that the processing precision of the sealing components is high. Due to the small sealing gap, friction and wear may occur when the machine operates poorly, reducing sealing performance. This type of seal is generally suitable for aviation transport, but its use is limited when transporting toxic, flammable, or explosive gases.
2. Packing seal: The packing seal is a sealing form that fills the leakage channel with packing to prevent leakage. The packing seal has a simple structure, is easy to disassemble and assemble, and is low in cost, thus it has been widely used. Because this type of seal is a contact seal, it can easily cause shaft wear. Due to its simple structure, ease of disassembly and assembly, low cost, good sealing effect, and low requirements for working environment and maintenance, it has been widely used in industries such as fertilizer plants.
3. Expansion ring seal: The expansion ring seal is placed inside the sealing box, featuring multiple elastic rings with notches. The outer ring of the expansion ring, due to its own flexibility and proximity to the housing, prevents relative rotation between the outer diameter of the expansion ring and the housing. Gas can only leak downstream through the gap between the expansion ring and the annular groove. During operation, the expansion ring is pressed against the downstream end face of the annular groove by the pressure difference on both sides. High-pressure gas fills the gap and enters the gap, further enhancing the seal between the outer ring of the expansion ring and the inner hole of the sealing seat, leaving the remaining leakage channel as just the gap. Due to the small gap of the notch, when installed, the slices may be misaligned, and only a small portion is sealed by several expansion rings before leaking out. If a gas sealing device is installed, the sealing effect will be better. Because this type of seal is a contact seal, the sealing effect is better, but lubrication is required during use.
